Home Improvement Projects that Protect Your Belongings

Throughout your life, you’ve likely accumulated a significant number of belongings. Home furnishings, books, pictures, clothing, and sentimental objects are just a few of the items you’ve come to own. Your possessions likely mean a great deal to you, so it’s important to take measures to protect them. You may find it beneficial to focus some of your efforts on home improvement projects that can do just that.

Roof Patching

Leaky roofs are more than just an annoyance. They can be the cause of serious damage to your home and threaten a significant portion of the things in it. Excessive exposure to water leads to the growth of mold and mildew and wears away at surfaces. Depending on the material, it can cause fragile surfaces to disintegrate, causing irreparable damage. The saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure is especially pertinent in places that see a lot of rain. Florida’s rainy season can be responsible for dumping as much as 70% of the annual rainfall onto the state. With the rainy season well over, now may be a good time to inspect your roof and patch it if necessary. You may find it helpful to enlist the aid of roofing professionals who have the tools and experience needed to figure out where the problems are and get the job done right. This will help you make sure your roof is in good condition and ready to protect the rest of your home and belongings during the next rainy season.

Window Tinting

Ample sunshine is one of the things Florida is best known for, along with sandy beaches and a handful of theme parks. While you may enjoy catching the rays yourself, your belongings likely don’t. As your skin darkens, the surfaces of your flooring, furniture, paint, art, and other belongings fade under the UV rays emitted by the sun. Window tinting provides multiple benefits , including protection from fading and sun damage. It does darken the amount of natural light that enters your home, so if you’re concerned about making sure you get enough, focus on tinting the windows that face east and west. Provided you have north or south-facing windows, you will likely still have ample natural light entering your home to enjoy its benefits.

Simple Home Security

While it would be nice to think that people are inherently good and won’t take advantage of the trust placed in them, that isn’t always the case. For a variety of reasons, some people prefer to take what they haven’t earned from those that have, especially if a house looks like an easy mark. Installing a simple home security system can deter would-be thieves from targeting your property since it can mean they are less likely to get away with the crime. If you’re concerned about the appearance of your home, you needn’t be. As technology has evolved, various security devices have become more discreet, allowing them to more readily blend into the rest of your home and avoid disturbing the overall look you’re going for. That said, it doesn’t hurt to have a sign posted, automatic floodlights, or outdoor cameras that make it at least somewhat obvious that your home is being protected.

Window Sealing

Windows are an essential component of home design, allowing for fresh air and sunlight to enter the home, and providing an emergency exit, should the need arise. Unfortunately, they are also a weak point in your home’s defenses. Apart from being an entryway for unwanted visitors, they can also be susceptible to water. Similar to water entering through your roof, water coming in from your windows can put your home and your belongings at risk of extensive water damage. This is especially the case in Florida, considering the hurricanes that come through from time to time. As such, it’s important to make sure that your window sealing is in good shape. Check the sealing around your windows both inside and outside your home. If you notice damage, it’s best to remove and replace it with new caulking.

Replacing Smoke and CO Detector Batteries

Perhaps one of the simplest home improvement projects you can do is to check and replace the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replacing the batteries takes just a few minutes and requires you to have just the appropriate batteries. You probably don’t even need any tools for this job. If you do, a screwdriver is likely enough to do the trick. It’s a small and simple thing, but it can make a world of difference. It can be lifesaving. Making sure your detectors have working batteries is especially important during winter seasons, as most house fires occur during fall and winter.

Porch Lock Box

Porch pirates have become somewhat notorious, and with the dramatic increase in online shopping this year, you may be more vulnerable to them now than ever before. Like most thieves, package thieves tend to take advantage of easy targets. You can make your packages far less targetable by investing in a porch lockbox. There are a variety of different styles of porch lockboxes, but they all work similarly. They allow your packages to be delivered and stored under lock and key until you (with the key) can retrieve them. Of course, no method is entirely foolproof, but it should discourage a good portion of would-be thieves. Those who are more determined will be slowed by the box, perhaps long enough for your security system to get a good look at them so the police can follow up.

Some home improvement projects are especially valuable because they don’t just protect your home but also protect your belongings as well. Reducing the risk of the elements, humans, and natural disasters damaging your home or property is the responsible thing to do as a homeowner. Take a look around your home and see what other projects you can do to bolster the protection your home provides to the belongings you keep in it.
