How to Add More Storage Space to Your Home

One of the pain points far too many of us experience is not having enough space to comfortably store your belongings in your home. There is certainly an argument to be made for not having more things than you can fit in your home. The thing is, what fits comfortably can change depending on how well you are able to make use of the space you have. So what are some things you can do to add more storage space to your home?

Store Vertically

When it comes to storing belongings, most of us are pretty comfortable making use of floor space. But what about the vertical space in your home? The walls of a home are all too often left underutilized, if they’re used at all, but they have so much potential in regards to storage space. You can line walls with bookshelves to hold all sorts of things aside from books. Movies, decor, and whatever else you might want to store in them can all find a home in a bookshelf. If that’s not quite your style, installing floating shelves can be another great option for making use of your vertical space. Don’t forget to add hooks on your walls to store coats, jackets, hats and more, especially by the entryway.

Install Bigger Cabinets

Sometimes we think that we have enough cabinet space when you first move into a home, but over time it becomes obvious that that’s not actually the case. If you’re struggling with cabinets that are too small, consider having bigger ones installed. How much sense this makes will, of course, depend on how much space you have in the room you’re installing them in. You don’t want to install new cabinets at the cost of your comfort in the space that’s left. Be sure to take both depth and height into consideration if you go for this option. Remember to carefully measure and mark things out so you can get a better feel for what you’d be looking at if you were to install bigger cabinets .

Use Closets Under the Stairs

Closets under the stairs can be great storage areas. It’s not like most of us use that space for anything anyway, so you might as well use it to store some of your belongings . If you have one already, great. If you don’t, adding one could be a great candidate for your next home improvement project. Use it to store things that you want to have fairly close to hand but don’t need to have access to all the time. It can also double as a coat closet or a place to store cleaning supplies like mops and vacuums. Just be careful about how you organize it. If you fill the space, you’ll have a hard time getting to the things in the back. You’ll also need to account for the fact that the further you go, the less space there is, so you’ll need to pack things in accordingly.

Clean Up Your Garage

Garages have so much potential. A lot of people use them as a safe place to store their car, while others treat it as something of an at-home storage unit. However you choose to make use of your garage, keeping it neat and organized can make it a much more effective storage option. Don’t want to choose between storing your car and storing your other belongings? Consider adding a modular garage to your property. A modular garage will give you more space and freedom to store items and declutter your yard. Practice using your garage space wisely too. Remember to make use of vertical space. Peg boards can be a great way to keep tools organized. You can even make use of ceiling storage racks to carve out even more storage space.

Get Creative with Your Stairs

The space under your stairs isn’t the only way to make the most use out of your staircase. You could turn the stairs themselves into storage space. You could design the stairs so that they double as bookshelves or drawers in which you can store different belongings. This may not be the most child-friendly storage option though, so you’ll definitely need to have a plan for childproofing it if you have children running around your home.

Furniture That Doubles as Storage

Furniture can be for more than just sitting or lounging on. If you need more storage space in your home, consider choosing hollow pieces that can double as storage. Furniture items like ottomans, stools, and benches can be designed so that they have interior space that can be used to hold your belongings. This can be a great option if you have a bunch of extra throw blankets that you don’t want to have out all the time or if you need some extra space to store your children’s toys. Just don’t be surprised if they also become a favorite hide and seek location.

Use Your Doors

Remember how we talked about taking advantage of the vertical space on your walls to store things? Your doors can serve the same purpose. Over the door organizers can be great for everything from organizing your shoes to providing the perfect place to store your toiletries and personal grooming supplies. Think about the things that go in the room that door goes to. You’re sure to find items that you can store on your door. You could install an ironing board holder on the laundry room door. Organizing your pantry just became that much easier with an over the door pantry organizer. The possibilities are endless.

Decluttering and downsizing your belongings can be a good thing to do once in a while. You shouldn’t have to get rid of the things you really care about though. If you find yourself concerned about the storage space you have available, getting creative about adding more storage space may be just the solution you need. Take a look around your home and see what creative ways you can add extra storage.
