How to Ensure the Success of Your Remodeling Project

Dotcom Design • Aug 04, 2020

Remodeling your home is a big endeavor, even if it’s only one or two rooms that you’re remodeling. Going into a remodel blindly however is not a good idea because you could end up losing money and your sanity along the way. If you plan for success, you’re sure to find it and your project will go much smoother from beginning to end.

Make Your Plan

Before you even begin choosing the appliances you want and paint color for the walls, it’s important to make a plan for your project. This plan should detail who’s getting involved with the project, how much it will cost, what your overall budget is, and your plan is for living with a renovation. Living with a renovation in your home can be difficult. You will need a plan for maintaining your sanity as well as keeping the project running on schedule. Your plan should be as detailed as possible before you begin your remodeling project.

Consult Professionals

You should also consult with professionals for your project even if you’re not going to hire a professional contractor to help you with your remodel. Professional contractors have been doing renovations for a long time and they can advise you as to what your best plan of action should be, especially determining the age of your house and the condition of the room you’re renovating. They can also advise you what problems to be aware of, which you can add to your plan. Once you’ve consulted with professionals, your plan will almost be ready to implement into action.

Go Through the Permit Process

But there’s another step that you will need to complete before you can begin the renovation and that is going through the permit process. Many homeowners think they don’t need a building permit to work on their home, but if you’re planning to sell your home in the future, you want to make sure that all the rooms are up to code, which requires you to get permits. Otherwise, you may have to pay more money down the road, possibly even redo the entire project.

Don’t Be Afraid to Spend

When you’re finally ready to begin your project, don’t be afraid to spend money on things that will hold up longer. You don’t want products that will need to be replaced within five years. That not only costs you more money over all, it will cost more work. For example, if you need to replace your roof, make sure to go for the option that will hold up for a long time. While you could go for the less expensive route, these roofing options won’t hold up in bad weather. You want the work completed during the renovation to last, which means being willing to spend money on the best product.

Spend Money in the Right Places

But, along with that, you need to spend money in the right places. Spending enormous sums of money on the most expensive tools or nails in the industry will not make your renovation complete itself any faster. You want to make sure you spend on things that you need to be of quality, such as appliances, plumbing fixtures and roofing supplies. Other items that don’t need to be top end, you can buy things that are a little less expensive. It’s important to know where you need to focus your budget so that your project can be of the best quality.

Plan for Additional Expenses

Even with all the planning in the world, sometimes you’re going to come into additional expenses when renovating. For example, while renovating the bathroom, the pipe might burst and flood the bathroom, causing thousands of dollars in additional renovations. Plan an emergency fund into your renovation budget so that you have excess funds just in case something goes wrong. Projects don’t always go perfectly to plan, which is why it’s important to have back up funds just in case.

Be Patient with the Process

While you’re working on the project, be patient if it takes longer than you think it does. Unexpected problems might come up. If you’re doing the project, you may need to enlist help from other people to finish the job. You may be learning new skills such as laying and grouting tile or installing bathroom fixtures. The process may not go as smoothly as anticipated, but that’s okay. Plan for that in your daily routine by having a place to chill away from the project, a no-renovation zone. Even if it’s just one room of the house, you will need the breathing space when the project gets tough.

Be Wary of Routine

Speaking of routine, your routine may change during the project. If you’re working with contractors, plan for them to have a cut-off time. Have plans for your family during the time the project is being worked on. Things may be different during the time of renovation but try to live your life as normally as possible. You may have to put up gates to block construction zones from young children and pets and you may have to put some of your belongings into storage so there is space for the renovation, but these small changes will reap big benefits further down the road.

Schedule Cleanup

If you’re working on the project yourself, make sure to schedule time at the end of your day for cleanup on the project. Renovations can get incredibly messy, and if you’re still living in the house while you’re renovating it, that dust and dirt can get everywhere, which can be deadly for people with allergies. Spend a bit of time cleaning up so that your house can feel cleaner despite the current renovations.

Working on your own home, whether by yourself or with a contractor, is an adventure, but you want to plan beforehand so that the renovation goes smoothly. Be prepared for obstacles and have a plan in place to destress so you can continue working on your home renovations.
