What You Should Do After Moving into Your Custom Home

Josh Krueger • Jun 16, 2021

If you’ve had a custom home built that meets your needs and fits your style, you have something awesome on your hands. Once the design and build processes are over though, some people aren’t sure what to do when they move in. Here are a few of the things you should do to make your custom home your own after moving in.

Set Up Utilities

Your custom home isn’t going to do you much good if you don’t have water, electricity, and gas set up for you. That’s why you should set up your utilities first thing as soon as you move into your home. You may want to call early so that they will be ready to go while you are moving things in. If you can, calling up to two weeks before moving in can ensure that your utility companies will have enough time to set up the utilities before you move in. There is nothing worse than moving into your new home and realizing that you don’t have access to the water and light you need to live comfortably.

Start Unpacking

The next step is unpacking your belongings and getting them into place in your new home. If you do your packing right in the first place (only pack what you need, and label well), then unpacking should be a breeze. The first step should be moving boxes to the appropriate rooms, so you don’t have to do a lot of running around after the fact. Then put yourself on a schedule that prioritizes the things you need most. Getting your bedroom unpacked is generally a good priority since it will give you space to relax and unwind after all the stress of moving. Then take care of rooms one at a time and give yourself plenty of breaks in between.

Get to Know Your Neighbors

Building relationships with your neighbors is one of the most important things you can do to ensure that you enjoy your time in your new home. Taking a minute in the first week or so after moving to introduce yourself to the neighbors can go a long way towards establishing those relationships. Bringing a simple treat around can help ensure you make a great first impression. You don’t have to pack all of your meetings into one day, instead, you can spread them out throughout your move and slowly get to know the whole neighborhood.

Throw a Housewarming Party

Once you’re settled in, a housewarming party can be a great way to get to know your neighbors a little better and let your friends or family see your new place. Having an open house-style party can make things a little easier and give you the chance to invite a lot of guests without providing too much additional entertainment. Having a good selection of finger foods can be appealing to a wide audience and make for easier clean-up. Additionally, decorative bamboo skewers make food fun to eat and creates less of a mess.

Take Care of Child and Pet Proofing

Even when you have a custom house, you likely have some child and pet proofing to do to make sure things are safe and comfortable for everyone. Adding gates to dangerous areas will help you to ensure that no one accidentally finds themselves tumbling down the stairs. IF you have both kids and pets, it is even more important to make sure everything is safe, and you have separation if you need it. Keeping pet food away from kids is an important part of childproofing that is sometimes overlooked by homeowners.

Make any Furniture Purchase You Need

Sometimes when you move into a new home, you have additional space that requires buying more furniture. Taking the time to buy new furniture that fits with your home and matches your style is a great way to make your custom home even more comfortable and suited to your needs. You may not want to buy every new piece you need right away, but getting the basics covered will ensure that your home looks great when you host your housewarming. Waiting a little longer for some of the items can help you to get a feel for how you use the space and have a better idea of what you need.

Update Your Address

You don’t want to miss out on important mail just because you have moved, so it is important to update your address with the post office and the places from which you receive the most mail. The process of updating your address with the post office is pretty simple, and they should be able to catch the bulk of items that are misaddressed to your old home. You will also want to change your address with the DMV so the address on your driver’s license and registration is accurate. Taking care of these changes early will help you a lot down the line.

Fall in Love with Your New Space

Finally, when you are settled into your custom home, it is time to fall in love with your new space and start enjoying your life there. Take time to explore your rooms and decorate them in ways that inspire you. Take walks around your neighborhood and enjoy spending time in your backyard. Make meals in your kitchen that are delicious and tasty and make you excited to be where you are. Doing all of this will help to make your home an even better place and ensure that you enjoy it to its fullest potential.

No matter where your new custom home is or why you chose to design it, you deserve to enjoy the space and make great new memories. Taking the right steps after moving in will help you to get more out of your new home and avoid some of the stress of the move. Once you are settled in, you will be able to enjoy your custom home and all the things that you planned for it in the first place.
