How to Transform a Room Without Making Major Changes

Redecorating can refresh and update your home, but you might not always have the time or budget for a full room makeover. Still, in every room, a few minor changes can make a big difference. Giving your home a new look doesn’t have to be a major project if you think creatively.

Rearrange the Layout

The simplest way to add interest to a tired room is to rearrange the furniture. Living rooms, family rooms, and bedrooms can benefit from a different layout. Just by making a few changes, such as switching the location of chairs or side tables, you can make the room look new.

Before moving furniture, think about functionality, flow, and balance. It’s great to create new traffic patterns, but avoid making narrow passages or layouts that require people to walk around obstacles. And, use the entire room ; it’s not necessary to have all pieces of furniture backed up to the walls.

Provide More Light

A room that’s too dark can interfere with activities and set a somber mood. Good lighting is important in kitchens and bathrooms, where people need to see what they are doing. Natural light is the most effective, so think about removing heavy curtains and replacing them with blinds or shades that can open fully.

Bathrooms can be especially hard to light, since many of them have small windows or none at all. As with the kitchen, replace curtains with shades or consider frosting window glass to provide both privacy and light. Also consider replacing your shower curtain with clear shower doors. Glass shower doors help create the illusion of a larger space in your bathroom.

Use Accent Pieces

Even if your budget won’t allow you to buy new furniture, you can renew your room’s appearance with a small investment in accent pieces. A few pillows or a new throw rug can add color to the family room or living room, and a new bedspread will freshen up the bedroom. Rearranging wall hangings or adding a new picture can also provide an exciting change. In the kitchen and bathroom, new towels and linens might do the trick.

Let your creativity guide you as you envision new looks for your tired, old décor. Start small, and don’t worry about spending a lot of money. You can transform any room in your house with just a few simple and inexpensive changes.
